Democratic Rep. Conor Lamb of Pennsylvania admitted that Democrats' spending plans were so “adventurous” that taxing the wealthy would not be enough and the middle class would have to shoulder the burden.
Lamb made the comments at a virtual meet and greet event with Democrats last week.
“If we want to propose a lot of new spending and adventurous new government programs in our party, we have to have the confidence to ask… the middle class and people like that to contribute to it. And I think that's… what we're missing right now,” Lamb said according to the Washington Examiner.
He went on to say that Democrats were using the rhetoric against the wealthy deceptively because they were spending far more than could be taken from the wealthiest Americans.
“Some of the focus on the billionaires and the ultra-wealthy that people are putting in the news right now — it's fine, it's valid, it's not enough to fund everything we want to do,” Lamb explained.
“Well, the combined cost of everything that Democrats are proposing to do right now goes far beyond what billionaires are ever going to realistically pay,” he added.
The admission explicitly contradicts the continued promises from President Joe Biden that no one making less than $400,000 a year would face higher taxes to fund his spending schemes.
Lamb's office responded to the report with a statement denying that Lamb would personally support higher taxes on the middle class.
“Conor Lamb has not proposed and would not vote for a tax increase on the middle class. In fact, this year he voted for the largest middle-class tax cut in a generation, the Child Tax Credit, which every single House Republican voted against,” said campaign manager Abby Nassif-Murphy.
Democrats and Biden are celebrating after passing a $1.2 trillion spending bill on Friday evening despite dissent from the far left members of the party. The massive spending bill could not have passed without 13 Republicans who voted for it and made up for a handful of Democrats who voted against it, including the progressive “squad.”
